More than 1,000 excerpts from Australia's television and film archives are now be available online with the launch of a new website.

The site is a $2.4 million initiative between the Federal Government and the Australian Film Commission (AFC).

Site curator Paul Byrnes says teachers and students will have access to 100 years of film archives, including some that have not previously been available to the public.

"Teachers are also telling us that it's very rare that they can use whole feature films but they're quite happy to use short clips in order to illustrate a certain point," he said.

"So they'll be able to use clips from the feature film Gallipoli, and clips from a documentary on Gallipoli and actuality taken at Gallipoli all of which will be available on the site."

Mr Byrnes says by next year the site will contain more than 2,000 clips.

"It's a searchable database ... that allows people to search by topic, not just by the title of the film," he said.

"If you don't know the title of the film, but if you want clips about the the first world war then this site will throw up 10 or 15 clips from the first world war just by entering those words in the search basis.

"So it's going to be a lot more flexible than anything that's been available before."

The website can be found at http://australianscreen.com.au.
